1. Manuka honey is Bacteriostatic, meaning bacteria cannot thrive or reproduce in this environment. Manuka honey has an acidic pH of 3-4, and bacteria needs a pH of 6-8 for reproduction. In addition, the bacteria does not know it is under attack and therefore will not mutate around it.
2. Manuka honey assists in Autolytic Debridement, leaving the wound clean and promoting new tissue growth. Studies show that Manuka honey promotes debridement in part due to the osmotic action of honey which pulls fluid from the lymph layers to provide continuous moist wound flushing to the wound bed.
3. Manuka honey reduces malodor. Bacteria in a wound feed off of necrotic tissue, producing an odorous sulphur and ammonia gas bi-product. When Manuka honey is introduced, the bacteria present prefer to feed off of the sugars in the honey, resulting in no odorous gas emissions.
4. Manuka honey reduces inflammation, by halting the presence of bacteria, and allows wounds to progress through the healing process.
